So many lights!? The newer your vehicle the more dashboard warning lights you see when you start up your ride. What do you do if a vehicle dashboard light stays on once your vehicle is running? Do not ignore them! Your vehicle has detected a problem. It could be something simple like a door ajar, an unsecured seatbelt, or a parking brake still fully or partially engaged. It may also be something more serious, especially if it’s flashing, like a failing brake system or an engine problem.

What do all those system status lights and codes mean? Your vehicle owner’s manual will explain or you can review the article below for more information. (Keep in mind that simply reading a code does not always identify the problem, it simply indicates where the system detected an issue. The real cause might be somewhere else.)

What Does a Vehicle Dashboard Light Mean?

Modern vehicles are complex machines. The average new car has over two dozen computer modules working behind the scenes, a vast network of sensors, and hundreds of electrical wires linking all these components together. This complexity means that there is a lot to go wrong with a car, and when things do, your first indication is often a vehicle dashboard light warning on the instrument panel.

Dashboard warning lights come in a variety of colors. The most serious lights are red, and they typically indicate a major issue or component failure. Yellow or amber lights often indicate a lower-grade hazard or warning, such as the activation of the traction control system when driving on slippery roads. Green and blue lights simply indicate that a feature is engaged, such as the headlights or cruise control.

Below, we’ll walk you through the most common dashboard warning lights, so you’ll know when to call for a tow truck and when not to. Ultimately, the best source of information about your vehicle is the owner’s manual. If you’ve lost your owner’s manual, you may be able to download a digital copy for free on the automaker’s website.

Check Engine Vehicle Dashboard Light

The check engine light, or CEL for short, is one of the most common dashboard warning lights but also one of the least specific. That’s because the check engine light warns of any engine-related issue. This can include something as simple as a loose gas cap, or a more serious issue like a misfire, knocking, or a loss of compression, which could result in premature engine wear or failure.

The check engine light can be red or amber, and it typically features the outline of an engine, the words “service engine soon”, or simply “check engine” in bold letters. Some owner’s manuals also refer to it as the malfunction indicator light or MIL.

It is completely normal for the check engine light to illuminate momentarily when turning the key in the ignition, but it should disappear as soon as the vehicle is running. If not, the system is detecting an issue. Due to the potential for severe engine damage, we don’t recommend driving your vehicle if the check engine light is on. Call for a tow truck and have a repair shop diagnose and fix the issue.

Engine Coolant Temperature Light

The engine temperature light features a red thermometer, and – when illuminated – it indicates that the engine is overheating. This is a serious problem and it can result in catastrophic engine damage, so you should always pull over and turn off your vehicle if you see this warning light. There are a number of issues that can cause the engine to overheat, such as a broken water pump, a stuck thermostat, a leak in the radiator or in one of the coolant hoses, or a broken head gasket.

Transmission Fluid Temperature Light

The transmission temperature light is often depicted as a yellow or red thermometer surrounded by a gear, or with the words “AT OIL TEMP”. When illuminated, this light indicates that the transmission is overheating. Like before, you should stop and turn off your vehicle when it’s safe to do so if you see this warning light. Common reasons for an overheating transmission include low fluid levels, worn internal components, as well as high mileage, and sustained heavy towing.

Engine Oil Pressure Vehicle Dashboard Light

The engine oil pressure light is typically depicted as a red oil can, and it signifies that oil is not circulating properly through the engine. This is a major issue because insufficient oil pressure can cause an engine to wear prematurely or even seize up. Common reasons for low oil pressure include low oil levels, a worn oil pump, and other worn internal components. It’s a good idea to check the engine oil level regularly and change the oil at the manufacturer-specified intervals.

Engine Oil Change Light

The oil change light does exactly what you’d expect. It indicates when the engine oil should be changed, based on mileage driven. Most modern vehicles require synthetic oil, which has allowed automakers to stretch oil change intervals from the traditional 3,000-mile limit to anywhere from 5,000 to 15,000 miles in some cases. You may see this indicator displayed as text instead of as a light, such as “Service Engine Soon” or “Oil Change Required”. Some automakers refer to this vehicle dashboard light feature as the oil life indicator as well.

Battery Vehicle Dashboard Warning Light

The battery indicator light is red in color and it features the outline of a battery with plus and minus symbols. When illuminated, this light indicates that the vehicle’s charging system isn’t functioning properly. The battery could be the issue, but the cause could also be a loose or corroded battery cable, a worn alternator, a broken accessory belt, or another electrical fault in the system.

It’s completely normal to see this light turn on and then off when starting your vehicle. If the light turns on while you’re driving though, you should pull over and stop as soon as it’s safe to do so. Otherwise, the engine will stall once the battery is completely drained, which may only take a few minutes.

Tire Pressure Vehicle Dashboard Light

The tire pressure warning light is depicted as a yellow tire with an exclamation point in the middle. This warning light signifies that one of the vehicle’s tires is underinflated, and – in some modern vehicles – it can indicate which exact tire has low pressure.

The tire pressure monitoring system (or TPMS) is responsible for activating this light. If it turns on while you’re driving, you should pull over and stop as soon as possible. Driving with a flat or underinflated tire is unsafe, as it can drastically alter the vehicle’s handling. Call for a tow truck if any tire is flat, or change the tire if your vehicle is equipped with a spare. If the tires are all still inflated, you should drive to the closest service station to check the pressures and add air if necessary.

Common reasons for this light to turn on include a puncture, a faulty tire pressure sensor, as well as seasonal temperature changes, which can cause a tire to lose pressure gradually.

Reduced Engine Power Light

Modern vehicles are equipped with a failsafe system, or limp mode, that limits engine performance if a major fault is detected. This setup is designed to protect the engine, transmission, and other driveline components from damage. The system triggers the engine light to turn on, and – in some vehicles – a “reduced engine power” readout may also illuminate.

While the vehicle may still be drivable, it’s best to pull over and stop due to the potential for damage. A faulty throttle position sensor is one of the most common reasons for this light to turn on.

Brake Vehicle Dashboard Warning Light

The brake warning light features a red circle with an exclamation point or “P” in the middle, or simply the text “BRAKE”. When illuminated, this light indicates that either the parking brake is engaged or that there is an issue with the braking system. Try setting and releasing the parking brake when it’s safe to do so. Call for a tow if this doesn’t turn off the light or if the light comes on while you’re driving. Possible causes can include worn brake discs or pads, low brake fluid levels, a stuck parking brake, or an issue with the anti-lock braking system (ABS).

ABS Vehicle Dashboard Warning Light

The ABS light features a yellow or red circle with the letters “ABS” in the center, and it illuminates when a problem is detected with the anti-lock braking system. This system improves braking performance on slippery roads by pulsing the brakes to prevent the wheels from locking up and skidding. The brakes should still function if this light comes on while you’re driving, but emergency braking performance may be reduced. Common causes for this light to turn on include a faulty wheel speed sensor or an issue with the ABS controller.

Traction Control Vehicle Dashboard Warning Light

The traction control system works hand in hand with the anti-lock braking system. It selectively applies the brakes to limit the wheels from slipping during acceleration, and it often engages when driving on icy and snowy roads, wet pavement, sand, and gravel. The yellow traction control light – a car with two squiggly lines underneath – illuminates momentarily when the system is intervening. If the light stays on that means there is a problem with the system and it may not operate properly. A faulty wheel speed sensor is one of the most common reasons for this vehicle dashboard light to turn on.

Stability Control Vehicle Dashboard Warning Light

Electronic stability control, or ESC, is another aspect of the anti-lock braking system. Stability control works to keep the vehicle heading in its intended direction. It does this by monitoring wheel speed and steering inputs and then applying the brakes as necessary to prevent sliding or spinning. Some vehicles have a dedicated “ESC” or “VSC” warning light that illuminates when the system is engaging and stays lit if there is a fault, but many vehicles don’t. In those instances, the traction control warning light turns on instead.

Power Steering Vehicle Dashboard Warning Light

The power steering vehicle dashboard light features a red or yellow steering wheel icon, often with an exclamation point on the side. It illuminates when a problem is detected with the steering. If your vehicle is equipped with electric power steering (EPS), you’ll need to take it to a mechanic to get the issue diagnosed. If the car has hydraulic power steering the light often means that the power steering fluid reservoir is low. Top it off and keep an eye out for leaks. Schedule a service appointment if this doesn’t fix the issue.

It is not safe to drive the vehicle if this light comes on, because a lack of power steering assistance will make the car much harder to maneuver.

Airbag Warning Light

An illuminated airbag light indicates that there is a fault with the vehicle’s airbag system, which is often referred to as the supplemental restraint system (SRS). This vehicle dashboard light indicator typically features a red airbag icon, though in some vehicles it is replaced by “SRS” or “AIR BAG” text.

You should not drive your vehicle if this light turns on because it means that the airbags may not deploy in the event of a crash and the seatbelt pre-tensioners may not tighten appropriately. Have a qualified repair shop diagnose and fix this problem.

Seatbelt Vehicle Dashboard Warning Light

The seatbelt light does exactly what you’d expect. It features the outline of a person wearing a seatbelt, and it stays illuminated until the driver of the vehicle buckles up. Some vehicles also monitor the front passenger seat. If all occupants have buckled up and the light doesn’t turn off, this may mean that there is a problem with the belt buckle sensor or one of the pressure sensors under the seat.

Automatic Shift Lock Light

Modern automatic transmissions are equipped with a shift interlock, which prevents the vehicle from shifting out of park until the driver has pressed the brake pedal. In some vehicles, it can also prevent the engine from starting. This reduces the risk of the vehicle rolling away if the gear selector is pushed accidentally. The shift lock light features a green foot within a circle, and it turns on to show when the system is active.

Low Fuel Warning Light

The low fuel vehicle dashboard light features an amber or red gas pump, and it illuminates when the fuel tank is almost out of gasoline or diesel fuel, depending on the type of vehicle. The fuel level required to trigger this warning light can vary from vehicle to vehicle, but it often indicates about one to two gallons of fuel remaining. Additionally, this light may turn on if the gas cap is loose.

Washer Fluid Warning Light

The washer fluid light illuminates when a low level of windshield washer fluid is detected. This vehicle dashboard light is typically yellow and it features a windshield icon. The same symbol is located on the cap of the washer fluid reservoir, so you can easily tell where to add the fluid. Most vehicles only have one washer fluid reservoir and it’s usually found under the hood.

Engine Start-Stop Light

Many modern vehicles are equipped with automatic start-stop systems that are designed to save fuel in stop-and-go city driving. These systems can shut the engine off when the vehicle is slowing to a stop and quickly turn the engine back on once the brake pedal is released. This reduces the amount of time the engine is idling when sitting in traffic.

The engine start-stop light is typically an “A” surrounded by a circular arrow, and it can indicate a few different things. It may illuminate in a green or blue color to show that the system is active, or in an amber color to show that the system has been disabled. An exclamation point next to this icon usually indicates a fault with the start-stop system.

Vehicle Dashboard Security Light

The security light may turn on for a few reasons. It may illuminate and disable the ignition system if the incorrect key is inserted. This vehicle dashboard light may indicate a fault with the ignition if it illuminates while driving. The most common reason is to deter thieves. When the vehicle is parked and locked, it’s typical for the light to blink occasionally to indicate that the alarm system is armed. The design of this indicator light can vary, but it usually features the outline of a car with either a key or a padlock icon.

Glow Plug Light

Diesel engines are equipped with glow plugs, which are designed to heat up the combustion chamber and assist with starting the engine when it’s cold. It takes a few seconds for glow plugs to sufficiently warm up the engine air temperature, and they shut off once it is hot enough.

The amber glow plug light – a squiggle with two loops – illuminates to show that the glow plugs are warming up. The light turns off once the engine is ready to start. If the glow plug light blinks or remains on, it indicates that there may be a problem with this system and the vehicle may be difficult to start.

DPF Vehicle Dashboard Light

In addition to glow plugs, diesel vehicles are also equipped with a diesel particulate filter (DPF), which collects engine soot and ash as it travels through the exhaust. This filter improves emissions and reduces the amount of smoke coming from the tailpipe, however it can become clogged over time.

The DPF light illuminates when the filter is blocked and requires cleaning or replacement. This warning light is usually amber in color, and the design often features a box filled with small circles or a puff of smoke passing through a line of circles.

DEF Light

The diesel exhaust fluid light, or DEF light, is the third warning light that diesel vehicle owners should be aware of. This light looks very similar to the DPF light with the addition of two droplets to symbolize the fluid. The light turns on when a low level of diesel exhaust fluid is detected, often followed by text warnings to refill the DEF reservoir. This fluid is a mixture of urea and deionized water that is injected into the exhaust system to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. Another common name for DEF is AdBlue.

You should refill the DEF tank as soon as possible when this light turns on. Otherwise, the engine could enter a reduced-power mode or stop altogether if the tank is fully empty.

Cruise Control Vehicle Dashboard Light

The cruise control light typically features a speedometer icon, and it can indicate a few different things depending on the color. Green often means that the cruise control has been set. An amber or yellow light can indicate that cruise control is enabled but not set, or that there is a problem with the system. Refer to your owner’s manual for specific information about the cruise control system in your vehicle.

Adaptive Cruise Control Light

Adaptive cruise control uses forward-facing cameras and sensors to maintain a set cruising speed and distance to the car ahead. When engaged, adaptive cruise control can slow the vehicle down if the car ahead begins to slow down. Conversely, it can return the vehicle to the desired cruising speed if the car ahead accelerates or merges into another lane.

There are a few common vehicle dashboard lights related to the adaptive cruise control system. You may see text that reads “ACC”, a speedometer icon with a car behind it, or a car with waves in front of it. These lights typically indicate that the system is enabled. A series of bars between two vehicle icons usually indicates the desired following distance to other cars. Refer to your owner’s manual for additional information about this system.

Forward Collision Warning Light

Forward collision warning systems use a network of cameras and sensors to detect vehicles ahead and alert the driver if a collision is likely. The abilities and limitations of these systems can vary widely from vehicle to vehicle though. For instance, some systems are packaged with automatic emergency braking that can slow down the vehicle without driver input. Some systems aren’t, and they rely entirely on the driver to take action and apply the brakes. Other differences include the ability to detect pedestrians and cyclists.

The vehicle dashboard lights can also vary. Common alerts include two car icons separated by a star, text that reads “FCW” or “FCA”, audible beeping, and – if equipped – a rapid blinking from the head-up display. Again, you should check your owner’s manual for the most accurate information about your car’s safety features.

Lane Departure Warning Light

As its name suggests, the lane departure warning system alerts the driver if the vehicle is drifting out of its lane. Common alert methods include “LDW” or “LDA” warning lights, a symbol of a car veering out of a lane, audible beeping, and – if bundled with lane keep assist – a tug at the steering wheel to correct the vehicle’s path.

Parking Assist Light

If your vehicle is equipped with parking sensors, you might see a warning light with a “P” and a triangle separated by waves. This symbol may also be accompanied by audible beeping or a bird’s eye view of the vehicle. It indicates that either the front or rear bumpers are in close proximity to an object, but it may also indicate a potential issue with this system. Refer to your owner’s manual for additional vehicle dashboard light info.

Blind Spot Monitoring Light

Blind-spot monitoring systems use sensors at the sides and rear of the vehicle to detect other cars that may be obstructed by the driver’s field of view. These systems typically alert the driver by illuminating an icon – two staggered cars separate by waves – in the side mirror closest to the approaching vehicle. You may also see “BSM” or “BLIS” lights on the dashboard. These lights can indicate that the system is operating, but they can also indicate a potential issue. Again, refer to your owner’s manual for more detailed information on any vehicle dashboard light.

Drowsiness Monitoring Vehcile Dashboard Light

Driver drowsiness monitoring systems use a number of sensors to detect if the driver is paying attention to the road. Most systems look for telltale signs like constant steering wheel corrections and extended driving distances without a break, but some advanced systems can also monitor eye movements. These systems typically alert the driver by flashing a coffee cup symbol on the dashboard, as well an “attention assist” or “time for a break” message.

Can Coronavirus affect your vehicle?

If you’re like the rest of us, there very likely is a car in your garage or driveway that hasn’t moved much for a month or two now, if at all. When it has been used it most likely was a short run to pick up supplies. Just like you, your vehicle needs exercise and lack of use can lead to problems. Below is a list of components that suffer from a lack of use and tips to avoid problems from developing.

Battery
Your car’s 12-volt battery is the vehicle system that’s most susceptible to inactivity-induced problems.

Today’s high-tech vehicles often have multiple computers that are always on and monitoring the car’s systems. These computers do require energy, and if a car is sitting and not recharging, the battery can be drained within two weeks. To avoid a dead battery, drive your car at least once a week and take it for a 15 or 20-minute drive to recharge the battery.

Fuel
Gasoline degrades over time, but modern sealed fuel systems help minimize fuel oxidation and preserve fuel life. Even so, expert estimates on how long gas will last vary considerably — from a month and a half to half a year. However, the latter assumes keeping a full tank, which helps reduce gas-tank condensation.

If you’re especially concerned about your car’s gas going bad, you can treat it with a fuel stabilizer, which can extend the life of the fuel. The best advice is to drive it at least once a week for 15 or 20-minutes to keep things circulating. AND keep the tank full.

Brakes
When you’re not driving your car, rust can form on the brake rotors — especially if it’s parked outside and exposed to the elements.

It doesn’t really take long. In just a matter of days, the film of rust starts to build up.

When you drive, excessive rust can get into the brake-pad lining and result in noise, uneven braking, and brake-pedal pulsation. However, if you’re able to take a brief drive once or twice a week, you can minimize rust buildup.

If you are not using the vehicle, safely avoid using the parking brake as these same elements can cause things to get sticky and make releasing the parking brake challenge.

Tires
Proper tire pressure is important for your vehicle’s performance, safety, and gas mileage, and it even helps your tires wear evenly.

Tires naturally lose air, so it is a good idea to frequently check the tire pressure and to maintain the manufacturer’s recommendations for tire pressure. Cars that are stationary for a prolonged period are also at risk of developing flat spots on their tires. Like some of the other systems we’ve discussed, taking your car for a brief drive can help prevent this.

Air Conditioning
While giving your vehicle some exercise put the air-conditioning system through its paces, too, even if it isn’t hot outside. Also, leave the recirculation control in the open position so the cabin can air out.

Cabin air filter
Inspect the cabin air filter. Lots of things like pollen, seeds, dust, and bugs can accumulate on the cabin air intake grill and get sucked into the climate control system leading to odors, clogs, and mold. You can add products like BG Frigi Fresh to the climate control system to deodorize, clean, and sanitize it. That is also a good time to change the cabin air filter.

Wipers
Windshield wipers can dry out, crack, and become crusty. This leads to smearing and streaks, both very annoying and unsafe.

Oil Changes
Even though you are not putting many miles on your vehicles due to the stay at home lockdown doesn’t mean you can put off regular oil changes. Oil change recommendations are governed by both mileage and time. If a car is sitting and not being driven regularly, the oil will deteriorate and impurities will accumulate causing potentially serious engine problems and premature wear. Changing the oil based on time (three or four months) is the best advice especially with infrequent, short trip use.

Belts and Hoses
The engine belt(s), and any other critical rubber under your car’s hood, will eventually break down, but the timing of this degradation is highly variable. Most belts and hoses are expected to last quite a long time, but as with other vehicular components, disuse can cause problems. Rubber can dry out and crack, causing leaks or weakening.

Drive your vehicles at least once a week get them to full operating temperature and keep them there for at least 15 or 20 minutes. Doing this will prevent most problems by keeping everything flowing and lubricated.

There are many choices when it comes to picking the appropriate oil for your car’s engine. This article breaks down the basics.

Given all the motor oi l options out there, choosing the right oil for your car might seem like an impossibly daunting task. While there is a mountain of info to learn about the various oil choices, the first step is honestly quite simple: Look in the vehicle’s manual and/or consult a mechanic.

Your car’s owner’s manual will list the recommended oil weight, whether that’s a standard like 10W-30 or something more unusual. Later on, we’ll explain what that weight means and how you should adjust it based on the seasons. But for now, choose an oil with the recommended weight from a brand that displays the starburst symbol that indicates the oil has been tested by the American Petroleum Institute (API). In addition, there’s a two-character service designation on the container. API’s latest service standard is “SL.” SL refers to a group of laboratory and engine tests, including the latest series for control of high-temperature deposits.

Next, you need to choose the viscosity (thickness) that’s suitable for the temperatures your vehicle normally operates in (again, check your owners manual).

Those are the basics. But there’s a whole lot more to the story than that.

Understand the Labels

Motor oil labels.

SAE

These are the labels you’ll find on every container of reputable motor oil. The API donut on the right tells you if the oil meets the current SL service rating (C for diesel engines). It also provides the SAE ( Society of Automotive Engineers ) viscosity number and tells you if the oil has passed the Energy Conserving test. The starburst symbol on the left indicates that the oil has passed the tests listed for SL service.

Viscosity

Viscosity means a fluid’s resistance to flow. In motor oil, it’s rated at zero degrees Fahrenheit (represented by the number preceding the “W” [for winter]) and at 212 degrees (represented by the second number in the viscosity designation). Motor oil thins as it heats and thickens as it cools. So, with the right additives to help it resist thinning too much, an oil can be rated for one viscosity when cold, another when hot. The more resistant it is to thinning, the higher the second number (10W-40 versus 10W-30, for example), and that’s good. Within reason, thicker oil generally seals better and maintains a better film of lubrication between moving parts.

At the low-temperature end, oil has to be resistant to thickening so that it flows more easily to all the moving parts in your engine. Also, if the oil is too thick, the engine requires more energy to turn the crankshaft, which is partly submerged in a bath of oil. Excessive thickness can make it harder to start the engine, which reduces fuel economy. A 5W oil is typically what’s recommended for winter use. However, synthetic oils can be formulated to flow even more easily when cold, so they are able to pass tests that meet the 0W rating.

Once the engine is running, the oil heats up. The second number in the viscosity rating—the “40” in 10W-40, for example—tells you that the oil will stay thicker at high temperatures than one with a lower second number—the “30” in 10W-30, for example. What’s really important is that you use the oil viscosity your car’s owner’s manual recommends.

Why So Many Different oils

Look on the shelves in auto parts stores and you’ll see oils labeled for all kinds of specific purposes: high-tech engines, new cars, higher-mileage vehicles, heavy-duty/off-road SUVs. In addition, you’ll see a wide selection of viscosities. If you read your owner’s manual, you’ll know what the car manufacturer recommends for a brand-new vehicle. The manual may include a reference to Energy Conserving oils, which simply means that the oil has passed a lab test against a reference oil. It’s no guarantee of better fuel economy, but most of the leading brands have at least some viscosities that are so labeled. Let’s take a look at the different types.

How to Choose Between Synthetic and Conventional Motor Oil

Premium Conventional Oil : This is the standard new-car oil, except where Full Synthetic is required (many high-end and luxury vehicles). All leading brands have one for service level SL, available in several viscosities. The carmakers usually specify a 5W-20 or 5W-30 oil, particularly for lower temperatures, with a 10W-30 oil as optional, particularly for higher ambient temperatures. These three ratings cover just about every light-duty vehicle on the road. Even more important, though, is changing the oil and filter regularly. A 4000 miles/four months interval is good practice. The absolute minimum is twice a year. If your car has an electronic oil-change indicator on the instrument cluster, don’t exceed its warning.

Full Synthetic Oil : The oils made for high-tech engines, whether in a Chevy Corvette or Mercedes-Benz, are full of synthetics. If these oils pass stringent special tests (indicated by their labeling), it means they have superior, longer-lasting performance in all the critical areas, from viscosity index to protection against deposits. They flow better at low temperatures and maintain peak lubricity at high temperatures. So why shouldn’t everyone use them? Answer: These oils are expensive and not every engine needs them. In fact, there may be some features that your car’s engine needs that the synthetics don’t have. Again, follow your owner’s manual.

Synthetic Blend Oil : Standard for most vehicles today. These have a dose of synthetic oil mixed with organic oil, and overall are formulated to provide protection for somewhat heavier loads and high temperatures. This generally means they’re less volatile, so they evaporate far less, which reduces oil loss (and increases fuel economy). They’re popular with drivers of pickups/SUVs who want the high-load protection. And they’re a lot less expensive than full synthetics, maybe just pennies more than a premium conventional oil.

Higher-Mileage Oil : Today’s vehicles last longer, and if you like the idea of paying off the car and running the mileage well into six figures, you have another oil choice, those formulated for higher-mileage vehicles. Almost two-thirds of the vehicles on the road have more than 75,000 miles on the odometer. So the oil refiners have identified this as an area of customer interest, and have new oils they’re recommending for these vehicles.

When your car or light truck/SUV is somewhat older and has considerably more mileage, you may notice a few oil stains on the garage floor. It’s about this time that you need to add a quart more often than when the vehicle was new. Crankshaft seals may have hardened and lost their flexibility, so they leak (particularly at low temperatures) and may crack. The higher-mileage oils are formulated with seal conditioners that flow into the pores of the seals to restore their shape and increase their flexibility. In most cases, rubber seals are designed to swell just enough to stop leaks. But the oil refiners pick their “reswelling” ingredients carefully. Valvoline showed us the performance data of one good seal conditioner that swelled most seal materials, but actually reduced the swelling of one type that tended to swell excessively from the ingredients found in some other engine oils.

You also may have noticed some loss of performance and engine smoothness as a result of engine wear on your higher-mileage vehicle. These higher-mileage oils also have somewhat higher viscosities. (Even if the numbers on the container don’t indicate it, there’s a fairly wide range for each viscosity rating and the higher-mileage oils sit at the top of each range.) They also may have more viscosity index improvers in them. The result? They seal piston-to-cylinder clearances better and won’t squeeze out as readily from the larger engine bearing clearances. They also may have a higher dose of antiwear additives to try to slow the wear process.

If you have an older vehicle, all of these features may mean more to you than what you might get from a full synthetic, and at a fraction the price.

Going deeper.

Resistance to thinning with increasing temperature is called the viscosity index. And although a higher second number is good, the oil also has to be robust. That is, it must be able to last for thousands of miles until the next oil change. For example, oil tends to lose viscosity from shear, the sliding motion between close-fitted metal surfaces of moving parts such as bearings. So resistance to viscosity loss (shear stability) is necessary to enable the oil to maintain the lubricating film between those parts.

Unlike antifreeze, 95 percent of which is made up of one base chemical (typically ethylene glycol), petroleum-type engine oil contains a mixture of several different types of base oil, some more expensive than others. Oil companies typically pick from a selection of five groups, each of which is produced in a different way and in different viscosities. The more expensive groups are more highly processed, in some cases with methods that produce a lubricant that can be classified as a synthetic. The so-called full synthetics contain chemicals that may be derived from petroleum but they’re altered so much that they’re not considered natural oil anymore. Our custom blend contained 10 percent polyalphaolefins (PAO), the type of chemical that’s often the primary ingredient in a full synthetic.

The base oil package in any oil makes up anywhere from 70 to 95 percent of the mix; the rest is composed of additives. Does that mean an oil with just 70 percent base oils is better than one with 95 percent? No, because some of the base oils have natural characteristics or ones that derive from their processing, which reduces or eliminates the need for additives. And although some additives make important contributions to lubrication, by themselves they don’t necessarily have great lubricity.

The ingredients in an additive package differ in cost, as we said, but price is just one factor. Some work better in certain combinations of base oils, and some of the less-expensive base oils are a good choice for a blend because of the way they perform with popular additives. Bottom line: Every motor oil has a recipe. Refiners come up with a list of objectives based on the needs of their customers (the carmakers, for example) and formulate oil to meet those goals as best they can.

Now, keeping oil from thinning as it gets hot while it takes a beating from engine operation is one thing. But it’s also important to keep oil from getting too thick. Using premium base oils for low volatility—to prevent evaporation—is one approach. Evaporation of the base oil package not only increases oil consumption, but it also results in thicker oil (which decreases fuel economy).

Oil Additives

The use of additives is another approach to improving and maintaining oil performance. High engine temperatures combine with moisture, combustion byproducts (including unburned gasoline), rust, corrosion, engine wear particles, and oxygen to produce sludge and varnish. The additives not only assist oil in maintaining good lubrication, but they also help minimize sludge and varnish, and any damage from their formation. Here are the categories of key additive ingredients and why they’re important:

• Viscosity-index improvers : Reduce the oil’s tendency to thin with increasing temperature.

• Detergents : Unlike the household type, they don’t scrub engine surfaces. They do remove some deposits, primarily solids. But their main purpose is to keep the surfaces clean by inhibiting the formation of high-temperature deposits, rust, and corrosion.

• Dispersants : Disperse solid particles, keeping them in solution, so they don’t come together to form sludge, varnish, and acids. Some additives work both as detergents and dispersants.

• Antiwear agents : There are times when the lubricating film breaks down, so the antiwear agents have to protect the metal surfaces. A zinc and phosphorus compound called ZDDP is a long-used favorite, along with other phosphorus (and sulfur) compounds. If you must know, ZDDP stands for zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate.

• Friction modifiers : These aren’t the same as antiwear agents. They reduce engine friction and, so, can improve fuel economy. Graphite, molybdenum, and other compounds are used.

• Pour-point depressants : Just because the 0° F viscosity rating is low doesn’t mean the oil will flow readily at low temperatures. Oil contains wax particles that can congeal and reduce flow, so these additives are used to prevent it.

• Antioxidants : With engine temperatures being pushed up for better emissions control, the antioxidants are needed to prevent oxidation (and, therefore, thickening) of oil. Some of the additives that perform other functions also serve this purpose, such as the antiwear agents.

• Foam inhibitors : The crankshaft whipping through the oil in the pan causes foaming. Oil foam is not as effective a lubricant as a full-liquid stream, so the inhibitors are used to cause the foam bubbles to collapse.

• Rust/corrosion inhibitors : Protect metal parts from acids and moisture.

More Is Not Better

You can’t necessarily improve oil by putting in more additives. In fact, you can make things worse. For example, sulfur compounds have antiwear, antioxidation characteristics, but they can reduce fuel economy and affect catalytic converter operation. Too much of a particular detergent could affect the antiwear balance. Too much of a specific dispersant could affect catalyst performance and reduce fuel economy. Antiwear and friction-reducing additives also may have ingredients (such as sulfur) that could affect catalyst performance.

There’s a lot of pressure on the oil industry to reduce sulfur content in oil as well as in gasoline. But the industry’s resistance is understandable when you consider the delicate balancing act it must perform with each revolution of your car’s engine.

Don’t Forget the Filter

Oil filters are a completely different, albeit related, subject when it comes to an oil change. Again, it’s always best to consult your owner’s manual and mechanic on the type of filter for the situation.

You may get used to the annoyance of a shake or shimmy now and then, a squeal or squeak here or there, a pull to the left or right, sluggish performance, or any number of other signs or sounds your vehicle signals indicating the need for maintenance, often just simple basic servicing. Vehicle problems get worse over time and one problem often leads to another. Eventually, things break.

An inspection and test drive by a professional mechanic will quickly sort out annoying performance issues. Most vehicle problems are too often blamed as signs of the inevitable vehicle aging process when, more often than not, are the result of a lack of basic maintenance. Today’s vehicles are engineering marvels: smarter, better handling, and more efficient, but they aren’t maintenance-free.

Basic maintenance and regular vehicle inspections are essential to minimize repair expenses and maximize the serviceable life of your vehicle’s operating systems. Modern vehicles are very complex and have parts that function within micrometer tolerances. Every vehicle comes from the manufacturer with basic maintenance information and a situation/time/mileage schedule for inspection, adjustment, and/or replacement checks on all major operating system components. Depending on your driving style and conditions these components may have a shorter or longer than predicted life expectancy. Failure to inspect, service, or replace parts that have limited and manufacturer tested serviceable life expectations is what leads to the most disruptive and costly breakdowns.

Don’t ignore the maintenance signals your vehicles emit. Don’t put up with it. Ignoring pre-existing vehicle problems is not how you want to begin late fall and winter. Most people are really surprised by how well their vehicles perform once they remedy abnormal performance issues. “It runs and handles like brand new” is a common sentiment.

Auto Service Tips

The pros and the non-profit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) advise that the beginning of every season is the time to give your vehicle a checkup.
First things first. Read your owner’s manual and follow the manufacturer’s recommended service schedules. There are usually two schedules listed: normal and severe. Most vehicles fall under the severe use maintenance schedule.

General Service Recommendations

Engine Performance

Have engine driveability problems (hard starts, rough idling, stalling, diminished power, etc.) corrected at a good auto repair shop. Existing problems only get worse. Replace dirty filters, air, fuel, PCV, etc.

Oil

Change your oil and oil filter as specified in your manual, more often (every 3,000 miles or so) if your driving is mostly stop-and-go, rush-hour commutes, or consists of frequent short trips.

Cooling System

The cooling system should be flushed and refilled as recommended. The level, condition, and concentration of the coolant should be checked periodically (a 50/50 mix of anti-freeze and water is usually recommended.) If you’re doing your own work, allow the radiator to cool down completely before removing the cap. (Newer vehicles have coolant reservoirs.) The tightness and condition of drive belts, clamps, and hoses should be checked by a certified auto technician.

A/C, Heater

The A/C and heater must be in good working condition for driver and passenger comfort. Replace dirty inefficient cabin air filters. Run the A/C for at least 5 minutes every month. Use the A/C to defog windows faster.

Windshield Wipers

Replace old blades. Stock up on windshield washer solvent. You’ll be surprised how much you use.

Battery

The only accurate way to detect a weak battery is with professional equipment. But do-it-yourselfers can do routine maintenance. Scrape away corrosion from posts and cable connections; clean all surfaces; re-tighten all connections. If battery caps are removable (rare these days), check the fluid level monthly. A word of caution: Be sure to avoid contact with corrosive deposits and battery acid. Wear eye protection and rubber gloves. Note too that removal of cables can cause damage or loss of data/codes on some newer vehicles so refer to your manual for instructions.

Lights

Inspect all lights and bulbs; replace burned-out bulbs; periodically clean road grime from all lenses with a moistened cloth or towel. To prevent scratching, never use a dry rag.

Exhaust System

Your vehicle should be placed on a lift and the exhaust system examined for leaks. The trunk and floorboards should be inspected for small holes. Exhaust fumes can be deadly.

Tires

Examine tires for remaining tread life, uneven wearing, and cupping; check the sidewalls for cuts and nicks. Check tire pressure once a month. Let the tires “cool down” before checking the pressure. Rotate as recommended. Don’t forget your spare, and be sure the jack is in good condition.

Emergencies

Carry gloves, boots, blankets, flares, a small shovel, sand or kitty litter, tire chains, a flashlight, and a cell phone. Put a few “high-energy” snacks in your glove box
One last note…a lot more kids will be out and about as the weather improves. That means be extra aware of often distracted children.
