Auto shop hourly labor rates are only part of maintenance and repair costs. The total bill should be itemized separating labor hours and parts, and detailing any additional charges like diagnostics, set-up, shop supplies, environment fees, etc. It's the total bill and the shop's competence that's of paramount importance, not the shop's hourly rates, when it comes to maintaining or repairing your vehicles. The more experience the shop has the less time it takes to diagnose and do the repair and the better the job will be done. The more versatile and the bigger the shop volume the better their terms with suppliers as well as access to a variety of parts are, creating more options and potential savings for the customer.

Don't be misled by low hourly shop rates. It's how well the job is done and what the total bill amounts to that counts most.

All shops calculate how long they estimate the repair procedure to take. Many, but not all have access to, or use, a standardized database (such as Mitchell, AllData, etc.) to determine labor times. They cover just about every kind of repair possible and are keyed to vehicle year, make, model, etc. and give the average repair procedure times down to one tenth of an hour. Some shops adjust the labor times based on their experience or the experience of the mechanic doing the work. At J.C.
