Automotive Air Conditioning Service

Because of the complexity of the air conditioning system (and the special equipment necessary to service it) in-depth troubleshooting and repairs should be conducted by a professional mechanic. However, taking the time to learn the operational basics of your vehicle’s systems and performing regular visual inspections will help prevent breakdowns. This basic understanding will also help tremendously when communicating with your family’s mechanic.

The most common cause of poor cooling is simply a low system refrigerant charge. Keep in mind that high ambient temperatures and humidity lower the effectiveness of the air conditioning system. Generally a properly functioning vehicle air conditioning system can maintain a temperature 35 to 50 degrees F cooler than the air outside the car. If an abnormal drop in cool air output occurs have the system inspected.

The following maintenance checks should be performed on a regular basis to ensure that the A/C system continues to operate at peak efficiency.

  • Check the entire cooling system for leaks and make sure all the fans, motors, heater valve, and air ducts or doors are functioning.
  • Check the compressor and engine drive belts. If worn or deteriorated, replace or have them replaced.
  • Check drive belt tension and, if necessary, adjust or have adjusted.
  • Check the system hoses. Look for cracks, bubbles, hard spots and deterioration. Inspect the hoses and all fittings for oil bubbles and seepage. If there’s any evidence of wear, damage or leaks, replace or have the hose(s) replaced.
  • Inspect the condenser fins for leaves, bugs and other debris. Use a fin comb or compressed air to clean the condenser.
  • Have the system checked for the correct refrigerant charge.
  • Have the evaporator housing drain tube checked for blockage.
  • It’s a good idea to operate the system for about 10 minutes at least once a month, particularly during the winter. Long-term non-use can cause hardening and the subsequent failure of the seals.
